During your early english language classes, writing a summary essentially comprised reducing considerably the number of words of the whole passage. That is, you had to compress what you have read into a very brief account; no other specific requirements needed from you.
But in the General Paper level, this has changed enormously. The purpose of summary writing is more objective and more structured. And this is exactly what you will learn today, in this article.
Aim Of Summary Writing In GP Classes
=> To summarise only certain aspects of the passage directed by the examiner
You have to read and understand what the examiner is asking you. Be aware that he has a particular purpose in mind; to assess if you can provide/describe only and exactly what he is asking you + how well you deliver the results.
Why Has The Purpose Of Summary Changed For GP Papers?
The answer lies in the whole definition and aim of a GP class; a general paper class is primarily focussed on:
1) Analytical and critical thinking
2) assessing the general knowledge and reasoning of a student
3) Effective delivery of thoughts + Good usage of the english language
Hence, the summary is there to make sure you are selective and critical in filtering the specific and required information from a crowdy informative zone + conveying the message effectively.

If you search in my Archives, you’ll see that I wrote an article on a strange-looking motorbike called as ‘Electric Uno Bike‘. As a strong believer in free-style creativity, I was very attracted and amazed by this new invention crafted by canadian, Ben Gulak. Till then, I’m constantly keeping an eye on the evolution of this project and I got some news. It seems that the electric uno bike is progressing - that’s super cool. They even have their websites - UnoCylce - BPG-Technologies.
Uno Bike Talked On Press
Uno Bike was listed and mentioned in the following Press:
1) Chicago Tribune
2) Popular Science
3) Motorcycle Mojo
Uno Bike Acclaimed Awards
The sensational unicycle motorbike won the following awards:
1) Invention of the Year (Popular Science Magazine)
2) Best Engineering (National Motorcycle Show)
3) Best in Category (Toronto Motorcycle Supershow)
4) Best Engineering (Toronto Motorcycle Supershow)
The New Future MotorBike?
I still believe they will make it. Ben Gulak is a motivated guy who is fully convinced of his creativity. What do you think? Is there any chance?

On this blog, I have stressed several times that writing is critical to your success. You should invest time to learn how to write good english and hence developing your own methods and style of presenting your opinions. I also told you that you need to express your ideas convincingly. In this article I will explain something additional that you should think and know about; you should be able to make a clear distinction between efficient writing and effective writing.
What Is Efficient Writing?
An efficient writer is someone who writes an article considerately, without showing any true commitment, any true motivation and without any true desire to touch his audience. He writes just to convey a message. The message is there, that’s only his satisfaction. But do note that an efficient writer is doing things right.
What Is Effective Writing?
An effective writer is someone who is very diligent about what he writes. Unlike an efficient writer, he cares more than just conveying a message. He is keenly concerned in the way he wants to express his words, in how his readers will respond and about the overall quality of his “work”. He is very stubborn about making a forceful, appealing and convincing approach to writing his thoughts, taking care proofreading his work and refactoring it over and over again until he convinces himself that the work is a masterpiece (showing good characteristics of pillar articles). As you have guessed, an effective writer does the right thing.
Employers Will Look For Effective Writers Who Can Make The Difference!
If you are to do well (as a student, as an employee, as a writer or as a blogger) and if you want to progress in your chosen career, the ability to express yourself clearly, concisely and persuasively is a skill you should be trying to develop and nourish. In any competitive environment if two contestants are otherwise equal in intelligence and skills, the one who is the most effective in conveying his message will be the one who will earn the highest points, respect, credibility and consideration.
To Think ABout: If a marketing agency is looking for writers or composers, will he choose an efficient writer or someone who is effective?
How Is Your Writing Judged By Your Audience?
| Characteristics of your writing | Impression created |
|---|---|
| Writing clear | Considerate |
| Correct spelling | Well educated |
| Punctuation & grammar good | Competent |
| Arguments well presented | Forceful, convincing and well organised |
