Entrecard Is Down - Fire Broke At Their Hosting Server’s Datacenter

Posted on: Sunday, June 1st, 2008 | Written by Wakish

fire

I just noticed the following message on Entrecard’s main page:

There was a fire at our datacenter resulting in the failure of some of our systems, our database server appears to be offline still, we’re working on it and we’re really sorry about the issues at this time. more information arriving shortly.

Update: The outage is pretty serious, you can read more about the datacenter fire at ThePlanet forums. They’ve got teams of people there and they’re working through the night. We have no ETA at this time, very sorry.

I rushed on ThePlanet forums and the matter sounds a bit serious, here’s some quote of the recent news:

Today at approximately 5:45 p.m., a transformer in our H1 data center in Houston caught fire, thus requiring us to take down all generators as instructed by the fire department. All servers are down.

We are working with the fire department, with our facilities staff on site, to assess the situation.

To keep you updated, we will send messages every 15 minutes in Orbit and here in our forum.

From Doug Erwin:
This evening at 4:55pm CDT in our H1 data center, electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding our electrical equipment room. Thankfully, no one was injured. In addition, no customer servers were damaged or lost.

We have just been allowed into the building to physically inspect the damage. Early indications are that the short was in a high-volume wire conduit. We were not allowed to activate our backup generator plan based on instructions from the fire department.

This is a significant outage, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers. All members of our support team are in, and all vendors who supply us with data center equipment are on site. Our initial assessment, although early, points to being able to have some service restored by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Rest assured we are working around the clock.

We are in the process of communicating with all affected customers. we are planning to post updates every hour via our forum and in our customer portal. Our interactive voice response system is updating customers as well.

There is no impact in any of our other five data centers.

I am sorry that this accident has occurred and I apologize for the impact.

More teams from The Planet are coming along with more contractors from key vendors for electrical and facilities to help get H1 online. At this time, DNS infrastructure continues to propagate. ServerCommand servers are installed, but the teams are making sure all networking is intact and ready. In the meantime, please call our support lines for any issues. Additional support techs are available.

At this time, we do not have an updated Estimated Time to repair. Please continue following this thread for updates.

star The ranking of the 25 countries:

22) Finland with 35 points
23) Germany with 14 points
24) Poland with 14 points
25) United Kingdom with 14 points

star Was There An Apparent Biasness Towards United Kingdom?

United Kingdom finished last with only a miserable 14 points. UK was represented by Andy Abraham with his song Even If - which was surely worth more than 14 points.
It is said that some degree of “bias voting” were made, with many former Soviet states awarding Russia the maximum 12 points during the voting process.

I think it’s tremendously disappointing from the point of view of the United Kingdom,” said Sir Terry Wogan (commentator on the competition for the BBC since the 1970s)
Andy Abraham gave, I think, the performance of his life with a song that certainly deserved far more points than it got… When you look at the points that Spain got, that Bosnia-Herzegovina got – some really ridiculous songs“, he added.

Anyway, here’s a clip of the song which won Russia the award:

Electric Uno Bike - The Bike Of The Future Generation?

Posted on: Saturday, May 10th, 2008 | Written by Wakish

Uno Bike

This bike is known as the Uno Bike and has been invented and created by the 18 year old canadian, Ben Gulak. It is said that this electrical bike has been conceived from lessons learned from Segway device, but implemented in cooler package.

star Brief Infos About The Bike:
=> Has two wheels, side-by-side, and uses gyroscopic technology to stay upright
=> The wheels are independently operated making turning much more precise
=> Moves in the direction the rider leans (the more you lean, the faster you go)
=> To move backward, just lean back on the seat to tilt it backwards
=> Hits a top speed of 25 mph in its current configuration
=> Has a weight of 58kg
=> Has a range of 2.5 hours once it is charged from the mains
=> No controls except for an On-Off switch (so simple as that!)

”[..] it is designed for the commute to work through busy towns” says Gulak. “ I believe this could be electrical alternative to the car. I’m just looking for an investor to help me get it into production [..]”

Ben Gulak also claims that his innovative bike would help beat pollution and the design was inspired from a visit to China in 2006 - “The smog was so thick, we never saw the sun,” he said.

star My Point Of View

Well, this is amazingly wonderful and this guy is a very talented engineer. He will surely prove his worth and his new bike in the incoming years. The idea and philosophy behind is great. It takes guts, trust and faith in our creative and talented, out-of-the-box, mind to come forward to show our thoughts. And those who can make it, will succeed undeniably!

star Uno Bike Resembles Jeremy’s Bike In Code Lyoko?

Some of you might say that this bike should definetly have a connection with Jeremy Belpois’ virtual bike, from the famous Code Lyoko. :P :)
I end here with a trailer of Code Lyoko with Jeremy’s Uno Bike (you will see it precisely at 2mins,09secs in the video)

Nike+iPod - An Amazingly Creative Gadget

Posted on: Saturday, April 26th, 2008 | Written by Wakish

Nike+iPod with Shoes

Recently I met an old friend of mine who trains a lot for races (running).
He bought a Nike+iPod and he was training with this sports kit. I was very impressed as he explains to me all the available functionalities and boost which this Nike+ gadget provides. It is simply amazing..

starWhat Is Nike+iPod Sports Kit

- A small device which measures and records the distance and pace of a run
- used to track walking, running, and combinations of the two

bulb The Nike+iPod consists of 2 parts:

Nike+iPod Sports Kit

1) A sensor - precisely called as a piezoelectric accelerometer. It’s embedded with a transmitter that is mounted under the inner sole of the shoe. (see diagram above)

2) A receiver - This is meant to be connected with your iPod. (see the diagram above)

starAny Special Shoe needed?

While Nike recommends that the sensor needs a special Nike+ with a special pocket in which to place the device, my friend told me that his non-nike+ shoe was equally good for this purpose

starHow to Use the Nike + iPod Sport Kit

The best place with the best diagrams and clear explanation is surely the Nike+iPod Get in gear - have a look at the diagram there..

starSomething Striking

This device have in-workout audio feedback and pre-recorded congratulations provided by famous athletes like Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, Joan Benoit Samuelson, and Paula Radcliffe whenever a user achieves a personal best. See the following 2 videos for a concrete understanding:

starYour Stats Can Be Integrated With Nike+ WebSite

When the device is tracking your progress and personal workout, you are essentially connected with the Nike+ Website and getting exposed to other products also.

Quote from Wiki:

In addition to tracking personal workout statistics, the Nike+ integrates directly with the Nike website. Workout data can be automatically uploaded to the website during an iPod sync with iTunes or through another program via the website’s public API.
