Interview With Problogger Darren Rowse - Normal Blogging vs Review Blogging Discussed!

Posted on: Sunday, April 13th, 2008 | Written by Wakish

problogger book

This time I bring you an interview with Problogger, Darren Rowse. My interview subject is based on the approach and writing styles of normal blogging vs review blogging.

To Avoid any confusion, consider:

=> Normal blogging = the type of blogging I do here or like Darren does.
=> Review Blogging = blogging about reviews of products, camera phones..etc A concrete example has been given by Darren in the interview below.

starAbout Darren Rowse

Darren Rowse is a full time blogger and is making a six-figure income from blogging now since 2005. He is the man behind the famous ProBlogger Blog and several other blogs.
I would also like to mention that Darren Rowse has recently launched his own ProBlogger Book. Here’s a quote:

Unlike other books that are big on potential and theory, ProBlogger provides results based on the authors own experience of what really works through practical, tried and tested advice. Inside readers will learn:
How Bloggers Make Money
Direct Income Earning vs. Indirect Income Earning methods
Why Niches are Important
20 Ingredients for a successful blog post
Optimizing advertising
Which advertising platforms work best
Expert analysis of Technorati’s Top Blogs - why they work

Mr Darren Rowse, I have chosen you for this interview since I believe you are
the right person and in the right places to talk about writing styles
concerning normal blogging and review blogging

question mark 1) Darren, how long have you been doing “normal blogging” and “review blogging” ? And which one you started first?

bulb I’ve been blogging for about five and a half years. I started on a blogspot blog which then morphed to livingroom.org.au/blog - I’d classify this as a ‘normal blogging’ type blog where I talked about life, culture, spirituality and the experience of starting a new church that I was involved with.

For a while I was also involved with what you might call ‘review’ blogging at livingroom.org.au/photolog - this blog collated and organized reviews of digital cameras from around the web. I don’t really do this much more although have someone else do it on that blog for me now.

Over the last few years most of my blogging has been on ProBlogger.net and Digital-Photography-School.com/blog where I’d say I’m doing ‘normal’ blogging again. I much more enjoy this.

question mark 2) Which of the two blogging styles consumes more time and can you briefly tell us how you proceed in each approach?

bulb These days all I really do is the ‘normal’ blogging at ProBlogger and DPS.

question mark 3) I believe that writing for “normal blogging” and writing for “review
blogging” involves different writing styles. How far do you think this is true? Can you give us some insight concerning this?

bulb The review blogging in the style I did it is more about finding good content from others. This meant following a lot more blogs of others. Blogging on ProBlogger and DPS is more about finding something to say and then working hard on providing unique and useful information.

question mark 4) Any particular message you would like to convey concerning the interview subject?

bulb not really

question mark 5) About the layout and themes, would you say that it matters a lot? Any tips or points to consider in the choices for both?

bulb Yes it’s important - there are millions of blogs and one of the quickest ways to differentiate yourself from others and create a good impression is to have a slick looking and eye catching design.

The main tip I’d give is to test your design on a new visitor to your blog. Find a family member that hasn’t seen it before and get them to surf through your blog while you watch. See what they think of it, see how they navigate and watch how they respond to it. I wrote more about how to do it at Run a First Time Reader Audit on Your Blog

question mark 6) With problogger, you definetly have built a “loyal” readership, do you think this can also be achieved with review blogging and does it matter here?

bulb Yes I think it can be done - take a look at Engadget or Gizmodo and you’ll see that they’re doing a very similar thing. They add more of their own ideas to post which I think helps.

question mark 7) Darren, which one of those two types passionates you the most since we know that you take a lot of devotion and passion in whatever “niche” or “areas” you blog about.

bulb Do you mean which I am more passionate between normal ‘blogging’ and ‘review’ blogging? If so, ‘normal’ - it’s all I do these days :-)

Interview With John Chow - Choice For His Shitty Attempt At Viral Video Revealed!

Posted on: Sunday, March 30th, 2008 | Written by Wakish

John Chow

Following my article about John Chow Does Not Care For You, Though You Keep Caring For Him! I thought about interviewing Chow regarding his “shitty attempt at viral video“. I let you see the response..

star The Interview

question mark 1) John Chow why having chosen to display such a video, you could have opted for other funny options. Please tell us about this decision.

bulb The video was based off a Maclean and Maclean comedy routine that I heard way back in high school (that was two decades ago) and I’ve always remembered it for some reason. I never thought about doing any other options for the video. Over the years, I’ve performed that routine in front of friends and small groups. Always got huge laughs out of it. I know some people won’t like it but it’s not my job (nor is it your job) to please everyone.

question mark 2) Do you think this was the right thing to do? Explain your reasoning.

bulb It doesn’t matter if posting the video was the right thing or the wrong thing. What matter is I did something instead of nothing. Too many people go though life being scare of failing so they end up doing nothing. All it takes for the forces of evil to rule the world is for enough people to do nothing. I rather fail at doing something than be a complete failure by doing nothing.

question mark 3) Do you encourage your followers or readers to produce such type of video?

bulb I encourage anyone to step outside the box and try new things.

question mark 4) Most of your readers and fans, including me, have been very disappointed with your approach. Do you have anything to say (or you don’t care) ?

bulb As I said in answer 1, you can’t please everyone all the time. And you shouldn’t even try. Readers come and go. The current ones who are commenting on my blog are not the same ones from six months ago. If the readership on your blog hasn’t changed in the past six months, it means the only people reading your blog are family members.

question mark 5) But there are also a lot of readers who were very pleased, do you have anything to tell them too?

bulb It’s nice to know you can take a joke. :)

question mark 6) Did you read my article John Chow Does Not Care For You, Though You Keep Caring For Him!

bulb Yes

question mark i) What is your reaction?

bulb Awesome. I got people writing about it. It doesn’t matter if the response is good or bad. I get more traffic from bad press than I do from good press.

question mark ii) Do you think I have somehow convey to you “John Chow as a high profile blogger could have opted for a better option?”

bulb No, you didn’t. However, you could do it by creating your own viral video and show me how you would do it.

Dorm Check - The Interview

Posted on: Thursday, February 8th, 2007 | Written by Wakish

Last time, you remembered we went to take a cup of tea with the owner of a PTC or PTS website. This time we invite you for a dinner with the owner of a Paid-To-Post Forum, named as Dorm Check. Ready? Good, here we go..

The Interview:

Q => What is your name ?
A=> Colin

Q => Where were you born and raised?
A=> I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA.

Q => When did you decide to start Dorm Check ?
A=> I started Dorm Check on January 2nd, 2007. I started thinking about it around December 27, 2006.

Q => Why did you decide or what triggered you to start Dorm Check ?
A=> Its rather funny, the reason why I started Dorm Check. I was posting on myLot and decided that I was sick of how terrible there site functionality and community acts, so I decided to make my own community.

Q => What have been your most successful moments of your Dorm Check career ?
A=> The most successful moments were when I bought the first server and actually got it to work, and when the member count hit more than one :)

Q => Are you satisfied with Dorm Check ?
A=> Am I satisfied? Very. I am very happy with how it is coming along, and I am very proud of how the community has matured.

Q => Why should people use your site instead of others and do you think you have the special trait that other sites do not have?
A=> I’m not here to say anybody else’s site is better or worse than mine. From personal experience, I believe things I do are better than things are other people do. Haha. With all comedy aside, I believe that Dorm Check offers a much more official, intelligent, and ambitious community than myLot, Duno, or Payposter. This incredible community inspires very intellectually stimulating posts, which makes reading the forums that much more fun.

Q => Do you have another job/site other then managing Dorm Check? What is it?
A=> I actually have a few more sites, all part of the Dorm Check name. Dchits.com is an auto hits site that helps smaller sites grow. Yourwebgames.com is an online arcade to take a break from posting on Dorm Check. There is one more surprise that is coming very soon that I think most of the DC community will really like. To give a hint, it involves a very easy way to make a lot of money :)

Q => Is there something that you like the most about your site, Dorm Check?
A=> The thing I like the most is the little gold star next to my name.

Q => Any future plans for Dorm Check ?
A=> Tons of future plans. Friends and an updated profile are coming soon, and some really cool features will be out. You will just have to wait and see :)

Q => Do you predict an on-going success in the future of Dorm Check ?
A=> Dorm Check will be successful in the future. I guarantee it.

Q => In your free time, is there something (or things) you enjoy doing ?
A=> Most of my free time is devoted to working on Dorm Check. The rest of the time I am playing hockey or watching tv.

Q => How was your start and experience about “Earning Money Online”?
A=> Earning money online is not as hard as most people make it out to be. Just give it a few months and you will be making something. Whatever you do, do not invest more than 10$-15$ into a program that promises incredible earnings. Put the work into it and you will make money.

Q => Any advice to those who are eager about “Earning Money Online” ?
A=> Again, put the work into it and you will make money.

Q => Any special word for your members and fans of Dorm Check ?
A=> To the members and fans, thanks for always sticking with it. To the people who have been around since the first week of January, you guys are the best. In the long run you will get something for sticking around :)
